Hundreds of millions of pets live with people who garden. It is important to be reminded of pet health concerns in the garden. WSU Master Gardeners always stress how important it is to read product labels before using any fertilizer, herbicide or pesticide.

I went to the local garden centers and read the product labels for brands of fertilizer, herbicides and pesticides commonly sold in this area. First, most labels warned “Hazardous to children and domestic pets.” Then the labels included these instructions:

o Wear long pants, long sleeves, shoes and socks and chemical resistant gloves.

o Wash your gloves before you take them off.

o Do not smoke,...

We expect marriages to get rocky and families to provoke pain. But friends tend to be presented in a mostly happy light: think Sex and the City, or Friends. Bumps and scrapes between Samantha and Charlotte are in the plot but only so they might be resolved. Lovers come and go. Friends remain.

This idealisation does not help us in real life, where friendships do not just have entertaining ups and downs, but disturbing fights and bitter endings. Such a reality is demonstrated in new research based on data collected from the Mass Observation Project, just published in The Sociological Review.

Prof Carol Smart and her colleagues argue that some friends can be dumped quite easily....

Dog Injured in Northampton Bear Attack

NORTHAMPTON, Mass. (AP) Police say a bear attacked a dog in Northampton, sending the dog to the vet for treatment of puncture wounds.

The 9-year-old golden retriever is expected to survive the Wednesday night attack.

Police say the dog was outside a home about 8:30 pm when a mother bear and two cubs came into the yard.

The dog was apparently barking at the bears when it was attacked.

Police tell The Daily Hampshire Gazette (http://bit.ly/JFespH) the dog received stitches for three puncture wounds on its face and neck.

The bears left the scene.

Police say bear attacks on domestic pets are rare, but the mother was probably protecting its cubs.

Komets ready for next foe

RAPID CITY, SD The Missouri Mavericks haven#146;t played a game since April 2 and had the luxury of taking four days off from even practicing.

The Komets played four brutally physical games in that span against the Rapid City Rush, whom they eliminated from the Turner Conference semifinals with a 4-3 overtime victory Tuesday.

The Komets won the series 4-2.

The Komets are not worried because the Mavericks were able to rest entering the conference finals series, which starts Friday at Memorial Coliseum.

Collins’ friendships must take back seat vs. Bulls

CHICAGO | Loyalty is a big deal on the battlefield or corporate boardroom, but not in professional sports.

And certainly not during the NBA playoffs.

Doug Collins made his coaching debut with the Bulls in 1986-87 and returned home Saturday leading the Philadelphia 76ers against Chicago in the Eastern Conference playoffs.

The Bulls give me a very special feeling, Collins said before the game. They gave me my very first chance.

(Owner) Jerry Reinsdorf and I have become the best of friends. (Vice-president) John Paxson is like a son to me, so I have very strong feelings about him.

As Bulls personnel passed in the hallway, Collins would wave or stop in mid-sentence...

Building friendships with Bo

One World Links youth exchange, which took place during Easter 2012, was my second visit to Bo. It was a huge success and has gone some way to cement the relationship between young people in Warwick and Bo districts, a link I have seen blossom in my two years as One World Link youth co-ordinator.

During the trip, we ran workshops on ICT and leadership but I was primarily responsible for forums on global issues, in which young people from both Bo and Warwick would talk about a problem and try to come up with a localised solution. There were heated debates, but the discussions were beneficial. A particularly insightful moment was when we were discussing discrimination and the media’s...
